It looks as though it can charge at foes, then immediately change direction. Perhaps it's a foe best tricked into running down other enemies? To me, I'm thinking that when it changes color, it's chasing at high speed. (?)

It's the player.
You can change facing via a button press, and have to alternating modes of fire:
- Blue: directed to the facing direction. punctual but more powerful.
- Red: directed to the facing direction in a diagonal fashion ( they slightly move in a curve ). deal less damage, spread.
